We would like you to meet, Jessica Chapman with J. Chapman Law, P.A.

Tell us about your business and how you became the successful businesswoman you are today.

After graduating law school, I practiced insurance defense litigation for almost a decade.  I felt like a hamster on a wheel, and it only worsened when I had my two sons.  The dinner time expert depositions and trial preparation on the weekends was significantly impacting my family life.  I decided to walk away from a six-figure salary and take some time to spend with my babies.  Then I met a fellow local attorney and superhero mother (Stephanie Hochberger) who had a local practice and we joined forces in the areas of Estate planning, Probate, and Real Estate closings (title work).  What is better than working zealously for your clients during the week and having weeknights and the weekends with your family?  Property closings can be stressful, and I like making sure the process goes smoothly and that both seller and buyer are satisfied with the outcome.  In terms of probate, I recently had a very dear Aunt pass away and I was grateful to be an attorney who practices in estate planning and probate because it can be a very stressful and arduous time if you do not have the knowledge and expertise of how to proceed forward.

 Describe yourself in three words:

Detail oriented, responsive,  and compassionate

What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?

Opening my own law firm during the COVID-19 pandemic while homeschooling 2 children.  If I can do that, I can literally do anything!

What are your professional goals for the next six months?

Continue to grow my practice with my law partner, Stephanie Hochberger.  We want all local families to have an estate plan in place so that their beloved possessions can go directly to the intended recipients without having to go through a long and expensive probate process.  In terms of real estate, I’d be happy to do your closing, whether it be for a new home purchase or a refinance.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I’d love to work in the area of marine conservation and combating pollution.  Every time I got to a beach or park, I am always that girl picking up garbage.  It makes me happy.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?

Some days it is more difficult than others.  I try to disconnect at the end of the workday, make dinner, have family conversations at dinner, read books to my boys, etc.  They are growing up so fast.  There are nights that I find myself back on my computer after they are in bed because it is hard not to do something you love.

What websites do you visit every day?

Property appraisers’ websites, clerk of courts, the Fund (my underwriter is Old Republic), DocuSign, Simplifile, FedEx, etc.  But really my favorites are Costco and Target!

What are your top three favorite people/places/things to do in your city?

Growing up in South Florida both of my parents were teachers and had a modest income.  Therefore, I feel very fortunate to live on the water in Pompano Beach.  We love fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, going to the sandbar, inlet, beach, etc.  We also enjoy all the parks that Pompano Beach and Lighthouse Point have to offer.  When I’m able to sneak away for a girl’s dinner, we enjoy the local mom and pop restaurants that serve fresh seafood.

What is your goal for retirement?

I’d like to travel again.  When I was in law school, I obtained a dual Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Barcelona in Spain.  That afforded me the opportunity to travel Europe extensively.  I can’t wait for the opportunity to do something like that again.

Do you have any advice for women who’d like to start their own company?

It can be scary; that is undeniable.  But it is totally attainable.  And once you do it, you will never look back knowing that you made the right decision.

Any final advice?

I firmly believe that woman should support other women.  We can have a career and a family.  We should not have to pick between the two.  When I have the opportunity to hire a vendor or make a purchase, etc., I always lean toward a woman or woman owned company.  Together we can lift each other and move forward.
