Kim Kardashian. Mandy Moore. Bar Rafaeli. Rupert Everett. And now me!
These are just a few of the people who have shared their love of the blood-infused skin treatment known as the Vampire Facial. But don’t let the name fool you. Vampire facials have nothing to do with the undead. They do, however, breathe new life into your skin
I’m now on my second Vampire Facial with Dr. Sagar Verma of Lifestyle Physicians.
What exactly is a Vampire Facial?
The Vampire Facial is a combination of a microneedling and the application of PRP (platelet-rich plasma).
The PRP is derived by spinning the blood and separating the serum portion of the blood, which contains platelets. The serum contains platelets which are rich in growth factors. When this is applied to the skin in concert with microneedling, it will stimulate cell growth and turnover, increase collagen and elastin, and encourage more hydrated and youthful-looking skin.
When we age, our skin’s ability to produce collagen and maintain hydration is significantly reduced. PRP treatment reverses signs of skin aging in areas like the face, neck, and décolletage.
What is it good for?
Vampire Facials can help reduce acne scarring, lessen the appearance of age spots, reduce the severity of crow’s feet, improve the effects of sun damaged skin, treat dark circles around and under the eyes, smooth out and add volume to wrinkles, and tighten and lift skin in targeted areas.
What does the treatment entail?
The treatment begins with a blood draw to obtain your blood. Your blood is then run through a centrifuge to isolate the platelets.
A numbing cream is applied to your face to reduce any discomfort from the procedure.
The next step is microneedling, which is also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy. This is a procedure that uses a pen device to induce micro-injuries in the skin. The tiny channels produced by this process allows for deeper penetration of the PRP. It also allows it to stimulate the skin to heal itself through collagen production and cell regeneration.
Then the serum of your platelets applied. You may also opt to have your PRP injected into problem areas like filler.
How long does it take to recover?
Your face may remain red for a few days. Downtime varies from person to person. As it is your own blood, there is a very low risk of complications. To ensure a successful recovery, Lifestyle Physicians provides you with a post-facial care kit and complete instructions on how to take care of your skin.
How quickly will you see results?
The results are nearly immediate. You will see the result of the treatment after the first facial.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments needed differs from person to person, depending on the severity of damage to skin. Usually 3 treatments are needed for optimal effect.
How long do the effects last?
Depending on how well you take care of your skin, the effects of a Vampire Facial can last up to two years.
Are you a candidate?
As long as you are not pregnant and you don’t have any severe conditions, this treatment is ideal for anyone looking for healthier, more youthful skin.
